Biography
Blessed Antoni Enric Canut Isus, also known as Blessed Antoni Canut, was a Catholic priest in the Salesians of Don Bosco and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on February 17, 1874, in Llessui, Lleida, Spain.
Having joined the Salesian congregation, Blessed Antoni dedicated his life to serving God and helping others. He was known for his dedication to his faith and his compassionate nature. As a member of the Salesians, he worked tirelessly to educate and guide young people, instilling in them the values of love, kindness, and devotion to God.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, the Salesian community was targeted by anti-Catholic forces. On July 24, 1936, Blessed Antoni, along with his fellow Salesian priests, was martyred in Ronda, Málaga, Spain. They were brutally murdered for their unwavering loyalty to their faith and refusal to renounce their beliefs.
Blessed Antoni's life and death were a testimony to his profound faith and commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ. His martyrdom stands as a symbol of the immense sacrifices made by individuals who valiantly defended their religious convictions during a time of great persecution.
In recognition of his martyrdom and exemplary life, Blessed Antoni Enric Canut Isus was venerated by Pope Benedict XVI on June 26, 2006, through a decree of martyrdom.
