Biography

Blessed Antonio Cabrera Calero, also known as Blessed Antonio Calero Cabrera, was a Catholic priest in the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He served as an assistant pastor in the Pedroche community, where he shared his deep faith and love for God with his parishioners.

Antonio Cabrera Calero was born on May 1, 1907, in Pozoblanco, a town in the province of Córdoba, Spain. From a young age, he felt a calling to priesthood and dedicated himself to the study of theology and the service of God.

He was ordained as a priest and began his ministry in the diocese of Córdoba, serving in various parishes throughout the region. Antonio's humble and compassionate nature endeared him to the people he encountered, and he worked ardently to bring them closer to God through his teachings and pastoral care.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, a brutal conflict that ravaged Spain from 1936 to 1939, Antonio Cabrera Calero was martyred for his faith. On August 27, 1936, in Pedroche, Córdoba, he was killed for refusing to renounce his beliefs and for his unwavering dedication to the Catholic Church. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution.

Blessed Antonio Cabrera Calero's feast day is celebrated on August 27th each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. His life and sacrifice are now venerated by the Catholic Church, with Pope Francis officially recognizing his martyrdom on November 23, 2020, through a papal decree.

Furthermore, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Antonio Cabrera Calero on October 16, 2021, during a ceremony held at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, marking a significant milestone in honoring his life and sacrifice for the faith.
