Biography

Blessed Antonio Franco, also known as Father Antonio Franco, was born on September 26, 1585, in Naples, Italy. He came from a noble family of French expatriates. Even at a young age, Antonio showed great intelligence and dedication to his studies. At the age of 17, he earned a doctorate in civil and canon law, an impressive achievement for someone so young.

Antonio went on to study in Rome, Italy, further enriching his knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith. After completing his studies, he entered the service of King Philip III in Madrid, Spain, where he served as a courtier. Despite his position at court, Antonio maintained a devout and ascetic lifestyle. He slept on the bare ground or floor, consumed simple and humble meals, and devoted himself to piety and penance.

In 1610, Antonio was ordained as a priest, following a deep calling to dedicate his life to God and the Church. His commitment to his religious vocation did not waver, even amidst his responsibilities as a royal chaplain to King Philip III for ten years. Antonio's presence at court was praised for his humility and compassionate nature.

In 1616, Pope Paul V confirmed Antonio as the Bishop of the territorial prelature of Santa Lucia del Mela, Italy. This appointment marked a significant turning point in Antonio's life, as he dedicated himself to the pastoral care and spiritual well-being of the people in his diocese. He became known for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith and his tireless efforts to alleviate the suffering of the poor and sick.

In addition to his responsibilities as a bishop, Antonio served as a counselor and chaplain to the court of the kingdom of Sicily. Despite his close association with the nobility, Antonio remained steadfast in his commitment to a simple and austere life. He was known for his deep empathy and his work with those who fell victim to loan sharks, providing them with spiritual guidance and support.

Blessed Antonio Franco's life was marked by virtue and selflessness. He was a living example of dedication to his faith, with a profound commitment to penance and the well-being of others. He passed away on September 2, 1626, in Santa Lucia del Mela, Messina, Italy. After his death, his remains were found to be incorrupt and were enshrined in the basilica of Santa Lucia del Mela, where they still receive veneration to this day.

The heroic virtues of Blessed Antonio Franco were recognized by Pope Benedict XVI on January 14, 2011. This recognition paved the way for his beatification, which was celebrated on September 2, 2013, by Pope Francis. The beatification recognition ceremony took place in the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Santa Lucia del Mela, Messina, Italy, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
