Biography

Blessed Antonio Pérez Vacas, also known as Blessed Antonio Pérez, was a Spanish Catholic priest of the diocese of Córdoba. He faithfully served the community of Pedro Abad, a town located in the province of Córdoba, Spain, during a time of great upheaval. His life was tragically cut short during the Spanish Civil War when he was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith.

Antonio Pérez Vacas was born on 8 April 1865 in the town of Pedro Abad, Córdoba, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve the Church. Recognizing his vocation, he entered the seminary and pursued his studies in theology, preparing himself for the priesthood.

After completing his formation, Antonio Pérez Vacas was ordained a priest and began his ministry in the diocese of Córdoba. He was assigned to serve the community of Pedro Abad, where he quickly endeared himself to the local people through his compassionate nature, dedication to the sacraments, and commitment to social justice.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought about a wave of intense religious persecution. As a result, many clergy members, including Antonio Pérez Vacas, became targets of the violence. Despite the imminent danger, he bravely continued to carry out his pastoral duties, providing spiritual guidance and comfort to his parishioners during this turbulent time.

On 29 August 1936, Blessed Antonio Pérez Vacas was martyred for his faith in Pedro Abad, Córdoba, Spain. Blessed Antonio Pérez Vacas was officially recognized for his martyrdom and venerated by Pope Francis on 23 November 2020. Later, on 16 October 2021, Pope Francis beatified him during a ceremony held at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, further emphasizing the significance of Blessed Antonio Pérez Vacas' life and witness.
