Biography
Blessed Arcangelo Canetoli, also known as Blessed Archangel of Gubbio, was born in 1460 in Bologna, Italy. He experienced a tragic event in his childhood when his family fell victim to politically inspired massacres. Despite the loss of his loved ones, Arcangelo Canetoli remained resilient and determined to dedicate his life to serving God.
Seeking solace and divine guidance, Arcangelo entered the Canons Regular of Santa Maria di Reno, a religious congregation known for their participation in the liturgical life of the Church. He was ordained as a priest and went on to live at the Saint Ambrose convent in Gubbio, Italy, starting in 1498.
Throughout his life, Blessed Arcangelo Canetoli's reputation for holiness drew people from various walks of life to seek his counsel and intercession. Notably, both the humble and the powerful were attracted to his wisdom, kindness, and sanctity. Despite these qualities, Arcangelo repeatedly refused the offer of becoming the archbishop of Gubbio, choosing instead to lead a humble and devoted life as a priest.
On April 16, 1513, Blessed Arcangelo Canetoli passed away in Gubbio, Italy, after succumbing to an intense fever. His body was laid to rest at the Saint Ambrose convent on December 3 of the same year. Miraculously, his body remained incorrupt, a sign of his holiness and closeness to God.
Over time, the fame of Blessed Arcangelo Canetoli's sanctity and the numerous reported miracles attributed to his intercession led to his beatification. Pope Benedict XIV officially beatified him on October 2, 1748, acknowledging the exceptional virtue he displayed throughout his life.
