Blessed Ascensión Lloret Marcos, also known as Ascensión of Saint Joseph Calasanz or Ascensione di San Giuseppe Calasanzio Lloret Marco, was born on 21 May 1879 in Gandía, Valencia, Spain. She lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, marked by the Spanish Civil War.
Ascending the spiritual path from a young age, Ascensión joined the Carmelite Sisters of Charity and entered the novitiate on 6 December 1898. With a deep devotion to her faith, she embraced a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God and others.
Tragically, Blessed Ascensión Lloret Marcos became a victim of the religious persecution that engulfed Spain during the Spanish Civil War. On 7 September 1936, she was martyred in Gandía, Valencia, for her unwavering commitment to her Catholic faith. Her courage and steadfastness in the face of adversity serve as a testament to her strong spiritual character.
Recognizing her heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared Ascensión Lloret Marcos venerable on 20 December 1999, followed by her beatification on 11 March 2001.
