Biography
Blessed Bartolomé Carrillo Fernández, born on September 8, 1897, in Pozoblanco, Córdoba, Spain, was a priest of the diocese of Córdoba. He dedicated his life and ministry to serving the community of Baena in Spain.
As a devoted priest, Blessed Bartolomé Carrillo Fernández lived during a tumultuous period in Spain's history— the Spanish Civil War. During this time of political and social unrest, he fearlessly served the people, providing spiritual guidance and support despite the risks involved.
Unfortunately, his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith led to his martyrdom. On July 23, 1936, in Baena, Córdoba, Spain, Blessed Bartolomé Carrillo Fernández was persecuted for his beliefs and died as a result of his faith. His courageous sacrifice earned him the esteemed title of martyr.
Recognizing and honoring his sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Bartolomé Carrillo Fernández as venerable on November 23, 2020. This declaration marked the official recognition of his martyrdom and the heroic virtue that he exhibited throughout his life.
Continuing to acknowledge Blessed Bartolomé Carrillo Fernández's contributions to the Catholic faith, Pope Francis proceeded to beatify him on October 16, 2021. The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
