Biography

Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren, also known as "Blessed Benjamín" or "Benjamín Ortega," was a Catholic priest and member of the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He was born on March 30, 1885, in the town of Villalta, located in Burgos, Spain.

Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren dedicated his life to serving God and the Church. He joined the Vincentian Congregation, also known as the Congregation of the Mission, and became a member of this religious community. Throughout his priesthood, he demonstrated utmost dedication to his vocation, providing pastoral care and support to those in need.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren faced great hostility and persecution due to his faith. This tragic conflict witnessed a severe suppression of religious freedom and the targeted persecution of priests and religious figures. Despite the dangers he faced, Blessed Benjamin Ortega remained steadfast in his commitment to his ministry, courageously continuing his pastoral work even in the face of imminent danger.

Sadly, on October 19, 1936, Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren was martyred for his faith in Madrid, Spain. He suffered martyrdom alongside countless other priests and religious during this dark chapter in Spanish history.

As a recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis, on March 23, 2017, declared Benjamin Ortega Aranguren as "Blessed," acknowledging his willingness to sacrifice his own life in defense of his beliefs. Furthermore, on November 11, 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren, honoring him with this significant step towards sainthood.

The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena, located in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. The event was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, who were there to celebrate and honor the life and martyrdom of Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren.

Today, Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren serves as a powerful example of faith, courage, and dedication to the Catholic Church. His life stands as a reminder of the tireless commitment of countless priests and religious who have given their lives in service to God and their communities. Blessed Benjamin Ortega Aranguren continues to inspire and intercede for us, providing an example of love and devotion that we can follow in our own lives.
