Biography

Blessed Benvenuta Bojani, also known as Benvenuta Boiani, was born on 4 May 1254 in Cividale del Friuli, Italy. She was the youngest of seven daughters, and from a young age, she displayed a deep aversion to worldly and vain pursuits. So committed was she to a life of self-denial that, at the tender age of twelve, Benvenuta began voluntarily wearing hair shirts and a rope belt. However, as she grew older, the rope began to cut into her flesh, necessitating its removal. Yet, the rope had become so embedded that it proved impossible to untie it. Undeterred, Benvenuta turned to prayer, and miraculously, the rope fell from her body, untangled, and lay at her feet.

Recognizing her extraordinary devotion and determination, Benvenuta joined the Dominican Order as a tertiary when she was still a very young woman. She lived her entire life at home, embracing extreme penances and austerities. Despite the severity of her self-imposed mortifications, she remained steadfast in her faith and found great solace in her commitment to Christ.

Unfortunately, Benvenuta's life was marked by illness, and she was confined to her bed for a total of five years due to a serious ailment. Despite her physical limitations, she remained strong in her devotion to God and was carried to attend daily Mass. It was during one such Mass, on the eve of the feast of Saint Dominic de Guzman, that a miraculous event unfolded. Saint Dominic appeared to Benvenuta, and later, during the liturgy, she was suddenly and inexplicably healed, experiencing the powerful intervention of divine grace.

In addition to her spiritual experiences, Benvenuta had numerous visions throughout her life, encountering both angels and demons. Remarkably, she had the ability to banish the demons simply by invoking the name of Our Lady. Despite these extraordinary encounters, Benvenuta remained cheerful and confident in her unwavering trust in God, a testament to her profound faith and spiritual fortitude.

Blessed Benvenuta Bojani held a significant representation in her spiritual journey - she is often depicted holding a length of rope, symbolizing her early ascetic practices and the subsequent liberation she experienced through divine intervention. Her feast day is celebrated on 30 October.

After a life dedicated to prayer, penance, and close communion with God, Blessed Benvenuta Bojani passed away on 30 October 1292 in Cividale del Friuli, Italy, due to natural causes. Her sanctity and the impact of her spiritual life were recognized when she was beatified on 6 February 1763 by Pope Clement XIV. Her beatification process confirmed the cultus, or public veneration, that had long been associated with her name. Blessed Benvenuta Bojani remains an inspiration for her unwavering faith, cheerful disposition, and profound dedication to a life of holiness despite the numerous challenges she faced.
