Biography

Blessed Boniface of Valperga, also known as Boniface of Aosta, was born in the latter 12th century in Turin, Italy. He belonged to the noble family of the Counts of Valperga and was the son of Matthew and Anna Levi Villars. From a young age, Boniface received a good Christian education at home and also received guidance from his uncle, Arduino, who was the bishop of Turin.

Inspired by a deep desire to serve God, Blessed Boniface entered the Benedictine monastery at the abbey of Fruttuaria (modern San Benigno Canavese). His dedication and piety led him to become a monk at the monastery of Sant Orso Collegiate of the Canons Regular in Aosta, Italy. Boniface's spiritual life flourished within the monastic community, and he eventually became the prior of his house around the year 1210.

In recognition of his exceptional qualities and spiritual leadership, Blessed Boniface was chosen as the bishop of Aosta on 17 July 1219. He faithfully served the people of Aosta for 24 years until his passing. As a bishop, Boniface was known for his deep charity, humility, and tender care for his flock. His genuine love for the people earned him a special place in their hearts.

Throughout his episcopal ministry, Blessed Boniface dedicated himself to nurturing the spiritual growth of his people. He tirelessly preached the Gospel, encouraged devotion to the saints, and prioritized the education of clergy and laity alike. Boniface's gentle and compassionate demeanor endeared him to the people of Aosta, who revered him for his saintly virtues.

Blessed Boniface of Valperga peacefully passed away on 25 April 1243 in Aosta, Italy, due to natural causes. He was laid to rest at the Sant Orso Collegiate in Aosta. In recognition of his holiness, the bishop of Aosta dedicated an altar to him on 1 April 1291. Then, in 1302, his relics were enshrined, further highlighting his veneration among the faithful. Over the years, the relics were re-enshrined multiple times, in 1551, 1783, and finally in 1817, where they were placed between the high altar and the right aisle of the Aosta Cathedral.

Blessed Boniface of Valperga was beatified on 28 April 1890 by Pope Leo XIII. His beatification came after an ecclesiastical court specially convened in Aosta, Italy, in 1885 to consider his cause for canonization. The court recognized his exemplary life of holiness, devotion, and service to God and his people.

To this day, the life and example of Blessed Boniface of Valperga continue to inspire the faithful, reminding us of the importance of charity, humility, and love for our fellow brethren.
