Biography

Blessed Charles Meehan, also known as Charles Mahoney, was a Franciscan priest and a martyr who met his tragic fate in connection with the infamous Titus Oates Plot. Born around 1640 in Ireland, he dedicated his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church.

As a devout member of the Franciscan Order, Blessed Charles Meehan embraced the ideals of poverty, humility, and selfless service. His unwavering devotion and commitment to his faith led him to pursue a life of priesthood. Throughout his religious journey, he became known for his piety, intelligence, and compassion.

On 12 August 1679, in Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales, Blessed Charles Meehan was once again faced with the threat of persecution. On 10 November 1986, Pope John Paul II officially recognized his martyrdom through a decree, venerated him, and declared him blessed. A year later, on 22 November 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified him as one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales.
