Death: December 15, 1856
Blessed Charles Steeb, also known as Carlo Steeb or Karl Steeb, was born on December 18, 1773, in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg (modern Germany). He was born into a wealthy Lutheran family but would later embrace Catholicism and become a prominent figure in the Catholic Church.
As a teenager, Charles briefly studied in Paris, France, but was forced to flee due to the turmoil of the French Revolution. He sought refuge in Verona, Italy, where he continued his studies and encountered priests and lay Catholics who had a profound impact on his spiritual journey. Inspired by their faith, he underwent a conversion experience and decided to become Catholic, a decision that led to his parents disowning him.
Following his conversion, Charles felt a calling to the priesthood and was ordained. He dedicated himself to a special ministry focused on caring for the sick and reformed sinners. Charles became a member of the Evangelical Brotherhood of priests and laity, an association committed to evangelization and promoting Catholic values.
Charles Steeb furthered his education by studying civil and canon law in Pavia, Italy. He also developed a proficiency in languages and eventually taught them to others. Recognizing the importance of education, Charles co-founded the teaching order, Institute of the Sisters of Mercy, alongside Blessed Luigia Poloni. This order sought to provide quality education while also incorporating Christian values into the curriculum.
Throughout his life, Charles Steeb exemplified a deep devotion to his faith and a willingness to serve others. His compassion and commitment to the Gospel teachings earned him a reputation for holiness and virtue among the people he encountered.
On December 15, 1856, Charles Steeb passed away in Verona, Italy, at the age of 82 from natural causes. His exemplary life and dedication to the Catholic Church have been recognized and celebrated by the faithful. Pope Paul VI declared him Venerable on November 19, 1970, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Then, on July 6, 1975, Pope Paul VI pronounced him Blessed, further validating his saintly reputation.
Blessed Charles Steeb's feast day is celebrated on December 15, in commemoration of his solemn entry into eternal life. His legacy continues to inspire Catholics and all those who strive to live a life of faith and service to others.
