Blessed Cisinandus of Tarouca, also known as Cisinando, was a 12th-century Cistercian monk and evangelist. He was born in an unknown date but lived during the 12th century. Cisinandus was a spiritual student of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent figure in the Cistercian order.
Under the guidance and instruction of Saint Bernard, Cisinandus was sent on a mission to northern Spain and Portugal to preach and propagate the Cistercian spirituality. His mission was to establish a Cistercian presence in the region and spread the teachings of the order.
In 1142, Cisinandus founded the San Juan monastery at Tarouca, Portugal. This monastery, which bore the name of Saint John in honor of a vision Cisinandus received, lasted for over 700 years and became an important center for Cistercian spirituality in the region.
According to legend, Cisinandus had a vision of Saint John the Baptist in 1131. In this vision, Saint John asked for a monastery dedicated to him. A decade later, a supernatural light guided Cisinandus to the exact spot where the monastery was to be built.
