Biography

Blessed Clemente Vea Balaguer, also known as Brother Clemente Adolfo, was a Salesian brother, teacher, and martyr who sacrificed his life during the Spanish Civil War for his unwavering faith. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church.

Born on 9 June 1898 in La Jana, Castellón, Spain, Clemente Vea Balaguer entered the Salesian congregation, dedicating his life to serving God and educating young people. As a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, he embraced their mission of educating and guiding youth towards a life rooted in the Gospel teachings.

Brother Clemente Adolfo was known for his kindness, patience, and dedication towards his students. He took great joy in instructing them not only in academic subjects but also in instilling strong moral values and fostering their spiritual growth. His genuine care and love for his pupils left a lasting impression on all those he encountered.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Clemente Adolfo's religious commitment made him a target of persecution. On 15 August 1936, in San Mateo, Castellón, he was martyred for his steadfast faith and refusal to renounce his religious vows. Despite facing hardships and the threat of violence, he remained steadfast in his devotion to God and to his Salesian community.

Recognizing the courageous sacrifice made by Brother Clemente Adolfo, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable on 28 June 2012. This official recognition acknowledged his heroic virtue and martyrdom. Pope Francis further honored him by beatifying him on 13 October 2013 in Tarragona, Spain. The beatification ceremony, a celebration of his life and witness, marked an important moment in the Salesian congregation and the local Church, inspiring believers to follow in his footsteps.
