Biography

Blessed Conrad of Ascoli, also known as Conrad de’Miliani and Conrad of Ascoli Piceno, was born in 1234 into the noble Italian family of Ascoli Piceno, in the March of Ancona, Italy. From a young age, he developed a deep friendship with Girolamo d’Ascoli, who would later become Pope Nicholas IV.

Conrad and Girolamo both decided to join the Franciscan Friars Minor in Ascoli, Italy, and they embarked on a journey of spiritual growth together. They studied in Assisi and later in Perugia, where they further deepened their knowledge and lived out the Franciscan values of simplicity, poverty, and devotion to God.

Thanks to his intellectual capabilities and spiritual devotion, Conrad earned a doctorate in theology and was eventually appointed as a professor in Rome. His profound understanding of theology, coupled with his austere lifestyle, led him to become known for his unyielding dedication to the Holy Trinity.

In 1274, Conrad was assigned to serve as a missionary in Libya. However, due to declining health, he was forced to return to Europe. Upon his return, Conrad and Girolamo were appointed papal legates to the court of the King of France. While teaching theology in Paris, Conrad also dedicated himself to preaching in the streets and ministering to the sick in hospitals. His actions exemplified his unwavering commitment to sharing the love of God with those around him.

Girolamo, who had become Pope Nicholas IV, recognized Conrad's exceptional qualities and desired to elevate him to the position of cardinal. Unfortunately, Conrad's life was cut short before he could reach Rome to receive this honor. On April 19, 1289, Conrad passed away in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, due to natural causes.

The people of Ascoli Piceno lovingly built a tomb over Conrad's grave, which became a place of veneration for the faithful. In 1371, when the Franciscans re-interred his body in one of their churches, it was found to be incorrupt, a testament to his holiness.

Blessed Conrad of Ascoli was beatified by Pope Pius VI, who confirmed the cultus surrounding him. He is commemorated on April 19 by the Order of Friars Minor, honoring his lifelong commitment to God and his tireless efforts to serve others. As a representation of Conrad's dedication, he is often depicted as a Franciscan friar holding a cross and rosary while preaching to the people of Africa, symbolizing his missionary zeal and desire to bring God's message to all corners of the world.
