Biography

Blessed Davíd Carlosmarañon, also known as Davíd of the Blessed Sacrament or David Carlos, was born on 29 December 1907 in Asarta, Navarra, Spain. He was the son of Domenico Carlos and Gregoria Marañon, being born into a wealthy family.

In his early years, Davíd served in the military, following the path intended for him by his family. However, he felt a deep call to religious life and made the courageous decision to become a Piarist lay brother in Estella, Spain on 4 June 1931. He embraced the humble role of a gardener and cook within his religious community.

Tragically, during the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War, priests were targeted for execution. Despite the risks and pressure to renounce his religious vows, Davíd steadfastly refused to abandon his commitment to the Piarist order. When presented with an opportunity to spare his life by renouncing his religious life and tossing away his habit, he chose martyrdom instead.

On 28 July 1936, along the road near Purroy de la Solana, Huesca, Spain, Davíd Carlosmarañon was shot by his persecutors, who then callously burned his body. He offered his life in faithfulness to his vocation and devotion to God, becoming a martyr for the Catholic faith.

Davíd's courage and unwavering commitment to his religious calling deeply impressed the Catholic Church. Consequently, he was beatified on 1 October 1995 by Pope John Paul II, who recognized him as among the blessed. His feast day is commemorated annually on 28 July, the day of his martyrdom.

Though no visual representation is provided for Blessed Davíd Carlosmarañon, his example of faithful perseverance and self-sacrificing devotion serves as an inspiration for all those who face adversity for their beliefs. His story is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the willingness to undergo martyrdom for the glory of God.
