Biography

Blessed David of Himmerod, also known as David of Florence, was born around 1100 in Florence, Italy. He pursued his studies in Paris, France, where he developed a deep spiritual inclination. Inspired by the teachings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, David decided to join the Benedictine Cistercian monks at Clairvaux Abbey in 1131.

However, due to health problems, David was initially rejected from entering the monastery. Nevertheless, his perseverance and determination paved the way for his acceptance by Saint Bernard. Under the guidance of his spiritual mentor, David's dedication and piety flourished.

In 1134, Saint Bernard appointed David to establish and lead the Himmerod Abbey, located in Trier, Germany. Blessed David, with unwavering devotion, fulfilled this mission by breathing life into the monastery and fostering a vibrant spiritual community. He became renowned for his holiness and ascetic lifestyle, attracting many followers.

Blessed David of Himmerod was blessed with extraordinary spiritual gifts. Countless testimonies vouched for his miraculous abilities, including healing the sick, performing exorcisms, and possessing the gift of prophecy. His reputation as a miracle worker spread far and wide, leading to a significant increase in the abbey's influence and popularity.

Throughout his life, Blessed David led by example and fervently promoted devotion to the Catholic faith. His transformative leadership and unwavering commitment to the teachings of Christ inspired countless individuals to rekindle their faith and seek salvation.

Blessed David of Himmerod passed away on 11 December 1179, succumbing to natural causes. He was laid to rest in the chapter room of Himmerod Abbey, where his relics were revered by the faithful. In 1204, his relics were enshrined in a marble urn at the abbey church's altar. However, following the suppression of Himmerod Abbey in 1802, the relics were transferred to Trier, Germany.

Remarkably, after the Cistercians returned to Himmerod Abbey in 1919, the relics of Blessed David were once again brought back to their rightful place. The monks, in conjunction with the faithful, continued to venerate and seek his intercession, recognizing his outstanding holiness and connection to the divine.

Blessed David of Himmerod's beatification took place in 1699 when the general chapter of the monks of Citeaux authorized a memorial to be erected at Himmerod Abbey. In 1734, the canon of Florence, Italy, published a comprehensive Life of David and obtained approval from Pope Clement XII for the relics to be exposed for veneration.
