Biography

Blessed Emilio García Pareja, a layman in the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, was born in 1881. He led a life dedicated to his faith and was a fervent Catholic. Unfortunately, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, he became a victim of religious persecution.

On August 1, 1936, in the town of Morente, Córdoba, Spain, Blessed Emilio Garcia Pareja met a martyr's death for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic beliefs. He bravely embraced his faith even in the face of adversity and sacrificed his life as a result. His martyrdom is a testament to his profound devotion and willingness to stand firm in his faith until the very end.

Recognizing the heroic virtues and sacrificial death of Blessed Emilio García Pareja, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom on November 23, 2020, venerated him as a martyr of the Catholic Church. This decree signifies the Church's recognition of the fact that he was killed out of hatred for his faith.

In a joyous ceremony held on October 16, 2021, at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, Blessed Emilio García Pareja was beatified by Pope Francis. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, representing the Pope. This event brought great honor to Blessed Emilio's memory and announced his official status as a Blessed in the Catholic Church.
