Biography

Blessed Enrique Pedro Gonzálvez Andreu, also known as Enrique Andreu, was born on 15 July 1910 in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and was deeply committed to his faith from an early age. As a layman in the diocese of Cartagena, he dedicated himself to serving the Church and the needs of others.

Enrique Pedro Gonzálvez Andreu became a member of the Association of the Sons of Mary of the Miraculous Medal, a lay association devoted to promoting devotion to the Virgin Mary and carrying out charitable works. His commitment to the association was marked by a profound sense of love for Mary and a desire to bring her message of hope and compassion to the world.

Tragically, Blessed Enrique Pedro Gonzálvez Andreu's life was cut short due to the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. On 22 September 1936, in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering fidelity to the Catholic faith. During this turbulent time, many Catholics faced persecution and martyrdom for their allegiance to the Church.

Enrique Pedro Gonzálvez Andreu's courageous witness to the Gospel, even in the face of danger, earned him recognition as a martyr. On 1 December 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Then, on 11 November 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain.

The beatification recognition ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid. This momentous occasion marked the Church's official recognition of Enrique's martyrdom and his inclusion in the ranks of the blessed.

Blessed Enrique Pedro Gonzálvez Andreu serves as a powerful example of unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church, particularly during difficult times. His life, marked by his love for Mary and his commitment to charity, continues to inspire faithful Catholics to this day. His feast day is celebrated on 22 September each year as a reminder of his selfless sacrifice and undying love for God.
