Biography
Blessed Ezequiel Álvaro De La Fuente, also known as Ezequiel of Cerrato, was a Trappist monk who attained martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. Born on 21 May 1917 in Espinosa de Cerrato, Palencia, Spain, Ezequiel led a pious and devout life from an early age. His deep love for God and his desire to serve Him led him to enter the Trappist monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas.
As a Trappist, Ezequiel embraced the contemplative life, seeking union with God through prayer, manual labor, and simplicity. He dedicated himself to the ascetic disciplines of the Trappist Rule, which emphasized solitude, silence, and self-sufficiency within the monastic community.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Ezequiel's monastery came under attack due to its allegiance with the Catholic Church. Despite the dangers and hardships faced by the Trappists, Ezequiel remained steadfast in his faith and continued to fulfill his monastic duties with unwavering devotion.
On 4 December 1936, Ezequiel, along with many of his fellow monks, was arrested and imprisoned by militia forces in Santander, Cantabria. It is said that even in captivity, Ezequiel remained a source of spiritual strength and comfort for his companions, encouraging them to persevere in their faith and trust in God's providence.
Tragically, Ezequiel's life was cut short when he was executed for being a Catholic monk. His martyrdom bears witness to his unyielding commitment to Christ and the Church, even in the face of persecution and violence.
The holiness of Ezequiel Álvaro De La Fuente was recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 22 January 2015, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his martyrdom. Then, on 3 October 2015, Pope Francis beatified him during a recognition ceremony held at the cathedral of Santander, Spain. The principal celebrant was Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Today, the feast day of Blessed Ezequiel Álvaro De La Fuente is celebrated on 4 December, the day of his martyrdom. His life serves as a powerful example of unwavering faith and courage in the face of adversity, inspiring all believers to remain strong in their commitment to Christ.
