Biography
Blessed Florida Cevoli, also known as Lucrezia Elena Cevoli, was born on 11 November 1685 in Pisa, Italy, into a noble family. She was the daughter of Count Curzio and Countess Laura della Seta. Raised in a privileged environment, Lucrezia received an excellent education which was imparted by the Poor Clares of Saint Martin’s College in Pisa. It was during her time at this educational institution that she felt a profound call to religious life.
Responding to this calling, Lucrezia joined the Capuchin Poor Clares in Città di Castello, Italy on 8 June 1703. Taking the name Florida, she made her religious profession on 10 June 1705, dedicating her life to serving God and her community.
Upon entering the Order, Sister Florida became a spiritual student of the renowned Saint Veronica Giuliani, whose saintly witness deeply inspired her. Within the monastery, she served in various roles such as portress, cook, baker, and herbalist, diligently attending to the needs of her sisters in the community.
In 1716, when Saint Veronica Giuliani was appointed abbess of the house, Sister Florida was chosen as her vicar. This role allowed her to work closely with Saint Veronica and further develop her leadership skills. Sister Florida demonstrated her dedication, humility, and faithfulness during her service as vicar.
In 1727, when Saint Veronica passed away, Sister Florida succeeded her as abbess of the monastery. Leading the community for the next 40 years of her life, she proved to be a firm yet gentle leader. Abbess Florida fostered a deep devotion to the Eucharist within the community and tirelessly worked towards promoting the canonization cause of Saint Veronica.
Blessed Florida Cevoli is remembered for her unwavering commitment to God, her house, and her religious community. Her unyielding faith and dedication served as an inspiration to all who encountered her. Her life was marked by strength, virtue, and a profound love for the Lord.
On 12 June 1767, Blessed Florida Cevoli passed away in Città di Castello, Perugia, Italy after suffering from a persistent fever that lasted 37 days. Her death was mourned by all who knew her, recognizing the immense loss of a spiritual leader and role model.
Blessed Florida Cevoli was venerated on 19 June 1910 by Pope Pius X, who declared her heroic in virtue. Later, on 16 May 1993, Pope John Paul II beatified her, recognizing her sanctity and exemplary life. Today, Blessed Florida Cevoli's feast day is celebrated on 12 June, commemorating her life of dedicated service and devotion to God and her religious community.
