Biography
Blessed Françoise Tréhet, also known as Francesca, was born on April 8, 1756, in Saint-Mars-sur-la-Futaie, Mayenne, France. She was born into a noble family and grew up in a wealthy land-owning household. Despite her privileged background, Françoise felt a deep calling to dedicate her life to serving others.
At a young age, Françoise joined the Soeurs de la Charité de Notre-Dame d'Evron, also known as the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Evron. This religious congregation was committed to the education of children and the care of the sick, aligning perfectly with Françoise's compassionate nature and desire to make a positive difference in the world.
In 1783, Françoise began her teaching career at the parish school of St-Pierre-des-Landes. She brought a unique dedication and passion to her role, touching the lives of countless children with her unwavering commitment to their education and well-being. Françoise's kind and nurturing personality made her beloved among her students and fellow sisters.
During the turbulent times of the French Revolution, when anti-religious sentiments were high, Françoise demonstrated tremendous bravery and unwavering faith. She refused to take the oaths of allegiance to the state, standing firm in her loyalty to her religious beliefs and principles. Moreover, Françoise risked her life to hide priests who had also refused to submit to the state, protecting them from persecution.
Unfortunately, Françoise's courageous acts of defiance and solidarity with the Catholic Church did not go unnoticed. She was arrested for her actions and faced a trial where she was sentenced to death. On March 13, 1794, she bravely ascended the scaffold to the guillotine while singing the Salve Regina, a hymn honoring the Virgin Mary. Her unwavering faith and peaceful demeanor in the face of death demonstrated the strength of her devotion to God.
Following her martyrdom, Françoise's relics were enshrined at the church of St-Pierre-des-Landes, the place where she had dedicated her life to teaching. Her memory and legacy lived on, as she was venerated by the Catholic Church on May 3, 1955, through the decree of martyrdom by Pope Pius XII. Later, on June 19, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified Françoise Tréhet in Rome, Italy, recognizing her as a blessed servant of God.
Today, Blessed Françoise Tréhet serves as an inspiring example of courage, devotion, and selflessness. Her powerful story reminds us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith and standing up for what we believe, even in the face of great adversity.
