Biography

Blessed Francesc Trullen Gilisbarts, also known as Brother Hug Bernabé, was a devoted Catholic and a member of the Christian Brothers. He was born on 20th January 1895 in Roquetas, Tarragona, Spain.

Brother Hug Bernabé dedicated his life to serving God and others through his vocation as a religious brother. He lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, marked by the Spanish Civil War. It was during this violent conflict that he ultimately met his martyrdom.

On 1st September 1936, Brother Hug Bernabé was tragically killed in Vinyols, Tarragona, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his faith. The circumstances surrounding his death remain a testament to his steadfast devotion and refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs.

Recognizing his sacrifice and the virtues he demonstrated, Brother Hug Bernabé was venerated by the Catholic Church on 28th June 2012, by a decree of martyrdom issued by Pope Benedict XVI. This act acknowledged his heroic death and his status as a martyr for the faith.
