Biography

Blessed Francis of Fabriano, also known as Francis Venimbeni, was born on September 2, 1251, in Fabriano, Ancona, Italy. He came from a wealthy family, being the son of Compagno Venimbeni, a physician, and Margaret di Federico. From a young age, Francis showed a great inclination towards learning, and after completing his studies in humanities and philosophy, he decided to dedicate his life to God and joined the Franciscans in 1267 when he was just 16 years old.

During his novitiate, Francis had the privilege of studying under the companions of Saint Francis of Assisi himself, which greatly influenced his spiritual development. He fully embraced the Franciscan way of life, striving to live in poverty, humility, and simplicity, following in the footsteps of his beloved saint.

Francis was ordained a priest and had a special devotion to offering his Masses for the souls in Purgatory, believing fervently in the power of intercession for the deceased. Known for his endless prayer and tireless work, he would spend hours in contemplation, seeking a deeper connection with God, and then dedicate himself to missionary work in the region close to his hometown.

A man of deep conviction, Blessed Francis emphasized the importance of orthodoxy in preaching and teaching. He used his family's wealth to purchase an extensive library for his fellow friars, ensuring they had the necessary resources to understand and impart the true teachings of the Church. Although much of his written work has been lost over time, fragments of his theological and philosophical writings have survived, reflecting his intellectual pursuits and the depth of his faith.

Blessed Francis of Fabriano passed away on April 22, 1322, from natural causes, but his influence and example continued to inspire generations of believers. Recognizing his holiness and the profound impact he had on the faithful, Pope Pius VI beatified him on April 1, 1775, confirming his cultus.

On April 22, the feast day of Blessed Francis of Fabriano is celebrated, honoring his life and the legacy he left behind. Though no specific representation is mentioned, his dedication to prayer, poverty, and missionary work serve as enduring symbols of his saintly virtues.
