Blessed Francisco Alonso Fontaneda

Blessed Francisco Alonso Fontaneda, also known as Eduardo María, was a dedicated Catholic monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 10 October 1915 in Valtierra de Albacastro, Burgos, Spain.

From an early age, Francisco displayed a deep devotion to his faith and a strong desire to serve others. Recognizing his calling, he entered the Marist Brothers of the Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat dedicated to providing education to young people.

Francisco, throughout his religious life, exhibited a profound commitment to his vocation as a monk. He embraced the Marist values of simplicity, humility, and love for those under his care. He dedicated himself to teaching children, imparting not only knowledge to them but also nurturing their spiritual growth.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, a conflict that pitted brother against brother and caused immense suffering throughout the country. It was during this time that Francisco, along with many other religious figures, became a victim of the religious persecution that emerged. Despite the immense dangers he faced, Francisco refused to renounce his faith and continued to carry out his duties courageously.

On 23 August 1936, in the city of Toledo, Francisco Alonso Fontaneda was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic beliefs. He laid down his life, enduring violence and sacrificing his own well-being, rather than betray the values he held dear.

In recognition of his exceptional devotion and sacrifice, Francisco was declared venerable on 3 June 2013 by Pope Francis, who issued a decree of martyrology acknowledging his martyrdom. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Francisco, elevating him to the rank of Blessed.
