Biography

Blessed Francisco De La Vega González, also known as Brother Ángel, was a Trappist monk who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church.

Francisco was born on 15 October 1868 in Noceda de Bierzo, a town in the province of León, Spain. From an early age, he displayed a deep religious devotion and a calling to the monastic life. His desire to serve God led him to join the Trappist Order at the Santa María de Viaceli monastery in Cantabria, Spain.

As a Trappist monk, Francisco embraced a life of prayer, silence, and solitude. He dedicated himself to a life of contemplation and manual labor, following the Rule of St. Benedict. Known for his humility, kindness, and gentleness, Francisco became a beloved figure within the monastic community.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, the monastery of Santa María de Viaceli became a target for anti-Catholic forces. On 4 December 1936, Francisco and several other monks were arrested and taken to Santander, where they were imprisoned and subjected to severe mistreatment. Despite the grave threats and hardships he endured, Francisco remained steadfast in his faith and continued to offer prayers for his captors.

On that fateful day, Blessed Francisco De La Vega González was brutally martyred for his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs. He embraced his martyrdom as a witness to Christ, joining the ranks of those who gave their lives for the faith during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Francisco De La Vega González a martyr on 22 January 2015. The Holy Father, on 3 October 2015, beatified him in a solemn ceremony held at the cathedral of Santander, Spain. Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided over the beatification ceremony, honoring the blessed Trappist monk.

Blessed Francisco De La Vega González serves as an inspiration to all who seek to live a life dedicated to God and the service of others. His unwavering faith amidst adversity and his ultimate sacrifice testify to the power of Christ's love and the resilience of the Catholic Church. May his intercession bring strength, peace, and faith to all who seek his aid.
