Biography
Blessed Francisco Donazar Goñi, also known as Andrés José, was a revered monk and dedicated member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. Born on 10 October 1893 in Iroz, Navarra, Spain, he grew up in a devout Catholic family and was known for his deep faith and commitment to serving others.
Francisco joined the Marist Brothers at a young age and embraced the monastic life with great devotion. He was known for his humility, simplicity, and unwavering dedication to his calling. As a Marist Brother, Francisco took on various responsibilities within the community, including teaching and guiding young students in their academic and spiritual growth.
Tragically, during the tumultuous era of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Francisco was targeted for his alignment with the Catholic Church. On 11 August 1936, near Saganta, Huesca, Spain, he was martyred for his faith, becoming a true witness to
the teachings of Christ. Despite the immense threats and dangers he faced, Francisco remained steadfast in his beliefs and refused to renounce his devotion to God.
Following his martyrdom, Francisco's life and sacrifice were recognized and venerated by the Catholic Church. On 3 June 2013, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrology, formally acknowledging the heroic virtue of Blessed Francisco Donazar Goñi. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed.
Blessed Francisco continues to inspire others with his unwavering faith, his dedication to the service of God, and his courageous witness in the face of adversity. His feast day is celebrated on 11 August each year, serving as a reminder of the sacrifice he made for the sake of his beliefs.
