Biography

Blessed Francisco Martínez Garrido was a renowned Catholic priest belonging to the archdiocese of Toledo, Spain. He was born on November 28, 1866, in the town of Siles, located in the province of Jaén, Spain. As a young man, Francisco dedicated himself to the service of God and pursued his studies in theology.

After completing his education, Francisco was ordained as a priest and began his pastoral ministry in various parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Toledo. Known for his unwavering faith and devotion to his parishioners, he diligently carried out his duties, providing spiritual guidance and support to the faithful.

However, his life took a tragic turn during the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense political and social turmoil in Spain. The conflict, marked by violence and persecution against the Church, resulted in the martyrdom of many Spanish clergy. Francisco Martínez Garrido, too, fell victim to this religious persecution.

On January 14, 1938, in the town of Vélez-Rubio, located in the province of Almería, Spain, Father Francisco was martyred for his faith. His courageous refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs and his unwavering commitment to the Gospel led to his violent death.

Recognizing the exemplary life and sacrificial death of Father Francisco, his cause for beatification and canonization was initiated. On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized him as a martyr, granting him the title of "Blessed." This decree acknowledged Francisco's martyrdom, affirming that he died out of hatred for the Catholic faith.

The beatification ceremony for Blessed Francisco Martínez Garrido took place on March 25, 2017, in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The solemn celebration was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who represented Pope Francis on this special occasion.

Blessed Francisco Martínez Garrido is remembered and venerated on January 14th, the day of his martyrdom. Through his example of steadfast faith and dedication to his flock, he continues to inspire and intercede for the faithful.
