Biography

Blessed Francisco Simón Pérez, also known as Francisco Simón Pérez, was a devout Catholic and a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on January 29, 1916, in the town of Murchante, Navarra, Spain.

From a young age, Francisco showed great piety and a strong sense of vocation. He felt called to serve God and dedicated his life to the service of others. He entered the Claretians at a tender age, as he was deeply inspired by their mission of spreading the Gospel and working for the salvation of souls.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant, Francisco's faith and dedication were put to the ultimate test. He faced intense persecution and hostility due to his religious affiliation. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ and continued to spread the message of love, peace, and forgiveness.

Tragically, on October 19, 1936, Francisco Simón Pérez was martyred for his faith. He was executed in Mas Claret, Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, by those who sought to eradicate the Catholic Church and suppress religious freedom. He bravely stood firm in the face of persecution, refusing to renounce his beliefs.

Francisco, along with 109 other Spanish Claretian Martyrs, is remembered and venerated on October 19 and February 1. These dates commemorate the sacrifice of the martyrs who laid down their lives for their faith during the Spanish Civil War.

On December 21, 2016, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Francisco Simón Pérez, declaring him "Blessed." This decree, issued by the Holy Father, acknowledged his fidelity, courage, and ultimate sacrifice in witnessing for the truth of the Catholic faith. The beatification ceremony took place on October 21, 2017, at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. Archbishop Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided over the beatification celebration.

Blessed Francisco Simón Pérez serves as a profound example of faithfulness and devotion, standing as a witness to the enduring power of the Catholic faith even in the face of grave danger. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals, encouraging them to deepen their commitment to Christ and the values of love, peace, and justice.
