Biography

Blessed Giacomo Abbondo, also known as Father Giacomo Abbondo, was born on 27 August 1720 in Salomino, in the Duchy of Milan, which is now part of modern-day Italy. He was the second of six children born to Carlo Benedetto Abbondo and Francesca Maria Naya. Giacomo's life was profoundly influenced by his paternal uncle, Father Giovanni Carlo Abbondo, who played a vital role in shaping his vocation.

Giacomo pursued his studies in Tronzano and Vercelli, both located in Italy. He showed great dedication to his education and was ordained in the diocese of Vercelli on 21 March 1744. His ordination took place under unique circumstances, as he had obtained a dispensation from Pope Clement XII due to being underage at the time. Giacomo's passion for learning led him to obtain a degree in literature in Turin, Italy, on 31 October 1748.

After completing his studies, Father Giacomo Abbondo began teaching in Vercelli. However, he would eventually leave his teaching position in 177 to serve as the parish priest in his hometown of Tronzano. It was during his time as a priest that he earned a reputation as an exceptional preacher, breathing new life into the faith of his parishioners. He tirelessly visited his flock, provided spiritual guidance, and organized retreats, all the while cultivating a genuine aura of holiness.

Blessed Giacomo Abbondo's dedication to his pastoral duties did not go unnoticed, and his faithful service left an indelible mark on the community of Tronzano. He played a crucial role in revitalizing the faith life of the area and became a beloved figure among the locals.

Giacomo Abbondo's exceptional piety and profound influence on those around him continued until the end of his life. He passed away on 9 February 1788 in Tronzano, in the Duchy of Milan, Italy, from natural causes. Recognizing his holiness and the numerous miracles attributed to his intercession, the faithful began visiting his grave, turning it into a site of pilgrimage.

In light of his growing reputation for sanctity, his remains were re-interred on 13 March 1922, and his relics were enshrined in his old parish church on 5 November 2015. His humble existence and unwavering commitment to God prompted Pope Francis to recognize his heroic virtues on 9 May 2014. The Pope further elevated his status by beatifying him on 11 June 2016. The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Sant’Eusebio in Vercelli, Italy, and was led by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

One of the miracles attributed to Father Giacomo Abbondo's intercession involved the healing of Giovanni Domenico Viola in 1907. This case played a pivotal role in the beatification process, validating the spiritual power and intercessory ability of Blessed Giacomo.
