Biography

Blessed Gregory Celli of Verucchio, also known as Gregory Celli or Gregory of Verucchio, was an Augustinian monk and hermit who lived in Verucchio, Italy during the 13th and 14th centuries. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.

Born around 1225 in Verucchio, which is located in the diocese of Rimini, Italy, Gregory Celli entered the Augustinian order and became a monk in the monastery founded by his mother. However, for reasons that have been lost to history, Gregory was unjustly dismissed from the Augustinian Order. Despite this setback, he was immediately welcomed by the Franciscans at Monte Carnerio, where he found a new home and continued his spiritual journey.

Gregory Celli embraced the Franciscan way of life and became an integral part of the Franciscan community at Monte Carnerio. He dedicated himself to a life of austerity, solitude, and deep contemplation, living as a hermit within the Franciscan monastery. His devotion to prayer and meditation earned him a reputation for holiness and wisdom.

One notable aspect of Gregory's representation is the depiction of an iron ring around his body. This representation symbolizes his commitment to self-mortification and penance, as iron is traditionally associated with strength and endurance. This outward sign of his dedication to God and his pursuit of holiness serves as a reminder of the physical hardships he willingly endured for the sake of his spiritual growth.

Blessed Gregory Celli of Verucchio passed away in the year 1343 at the Franciscan monastery at Monte Carnerio, located in Rieti, Italy. Although the details of his life and the specifics of his veneration are not extensively documented, devotion to him and his sanctity were recognized by the Catholic Church.

In 1769, Gregory Celli was beatified by the Church, confirming the existence and authenticity of his cultus, or popular veneration. While he is not officially recognized as a saint, his beatification recognizes him as a blessed and affirms his ability to intercede and inspire devotion among the faithful.

Blessed Gregory Celli of Verucchio is remembered and honored on his feast day, which is celebrated on May 11th each year. As an Augustinian monk who found a home among the Franciscans, he serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and openness among different religious orders, as well as the power of perseverance and faith in the face of adversity. His life and example continue to inspire believers to deepen their spiritual journey and seek God's presence in their lives.
