30 June or 2 August (records vary) between 1236 and 1259 (records vary) in Guimarães, Portugal of natural causes; buried in the São Francisco de Guimarães convent; a chapel was built by the Brotherhood of Saint Gualter, and relics enshrined in it in 1577; the chapel was demolished during reconstruction of the convent church, and the relics were re-enshrined under its Descent from the Cross altar in 1742; at some point, the relics were placed in an statue used in processions, and were re-discovered in 2009

Miracles were reported at his gravesite and popular devotion developed in the region as early as the latter 13th century; relics enshrined in a chapel dedicated to him in 1577; in 1577, Pope Gregory XIII decreed spritual graces are granted to the faithful who visit sites dedicated to him on 2 August; 15 April 1621 Pope Gregory XV granted new indulgences for the memorial of Blessed Gualter
Biography
Blessed Gualter of Guimarães, also known as Walter or Gualtiero, was a spiritual student of Saint Francis of Assisi in the early 13th century. He was born in an unknown year and hailed from Guimarães, Portugal. Inspired by the teachings and example of Saint Francis, Gualter became one of the first Franciscan friars, joining the religious community at the Monte di Santa Catarina house near Urgezes, Portugal.
