Biography
Blessed Guillermo Fernández Aguilera was a married layman in the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who tragically became a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. He was born in Baena, Córdoba, Spain in 1874, and his life was characterized by his deep faith and commitment to his Catholic beliefs.
Guillermo was known for his strong devotion to the Catholic Church and his active participation in his local community. He was married and lived a simple yet meaningful life, dedicated to his family and his faith. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to serving others, regardless of their social status or background.
When the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, Guillermo found himself caught in the violent turmoil that ravaged his beloved country. His uncompromising commitment to his faith and his refusal to abandon his Catholic identity led to his tragic death.
Recognizing the martyrdom and heroism exhibited by Guillermo Fernández Aguilera, Pope Francis declared him venerable on November 23, 2020. This recognition emphasized Guillermo's exemplary witness to the Christian faith and his courage to stand firm in the face of persecution.
Furthermore, Pope Francis beatified Guillermo on October 16, 2021, in a special ceremony held at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, who highlighted Guillermo's steadfast devotion to his faith and his profound sacrifice for his beliefs.
