Biography

Blessed Guy Vignotelli, also known as Guy of Cortona or Guido, was born around 1185 in the town of Cortona, Italy. He came from a wealthy background and was known for his generosity and charity towards the poor. Guy led a comfortable life until a life-changing encounter with Saint Francis of Assisi.

After hearing a sermon by Saint Francis, Guy experienced a profound conversion of heart. He was so moved by the saint's message of selflessness and devotion to the poor that he made the decision to give away all his remaining riches. This act of renunciation led him to embrace a life dedicated to God's service.

In 1211, Guy was received into the Franciscan order as a tertiary by none other than Saint Francis himself. He embraced the Franciscan way of life, which emphasized poverty, humility, and love of God and neighbor. Guy's deep commitment to these ideals led him to transform his life completely.

Blessed Guy Vignotelli, now living as a Franciscan tertiary, embraced a life of simplicity and renounced worldly attachments. He sought solitude and chose to live as a hermit near his hometown of Cortona. His dwelling was a humble cell located on a bridge, where he devoted himself to prayer, contemplation, and acts of penance.

Throughout his life as a hermit, Guy became known for his holiness and for the many miracles attributed to him. He possessed a profound connection with God, and people sought his intercession and sought his advice on matters of faith and spirituality.

In 1245, Blessed Guy Vignotelli passed away at the Franciscan convent in Cortona. He died of natural causes, but before his departure, he had a vision of Saint Francis appearing to him. In this vision, Saint Francis came to lead Blessed Guy to the next life, comforting him and assuring him of his heavenly reward.

On June 12, the feast day of Blessed Guy Vignotelli is celebrated, although on some calendars it is also observed on 16th or 17th June. His holy life and his dedication to imitating the humility and poverty of Christ have inspired many throughout the centuries.

Blessed Guy Vignotelli was officially beatified in 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII. This beatification confirmed the cult and veneration that had grown around him, acknowledging his virtuous and exemplary life as a model for all Christians.

Today, Blessed Guy Vignotelli is remembered as a faithful disciple of Saint Francis of Assisi, a devoted servant of the poor, and a humble hermit who experienced God's grace and performed miracles. His life serves as an inspiration for people to seek a deeper relationship with God and to live a life of selflessness and devotion to others.
