Blessed Henry Zdick, also known as Henry of Olomouc or Henry of Olmütz, was a Bohemian prince and a son of King Wratislas I. He was born in an unknown year but is believed to have lived during the 12th century. His life and accomplishments are not widely documented, but his contribution to the Church and the spread of the Premonstratensian order in his diocese are well-known.
In 1126, Henry became the Bishop of Olmutz, located in what is now the modern Czech Republic. As bishop, Henry dedicated himself to the spiritual wellbeing of his diocese, leading the faithful by example and advocating for their needs. He demonstrated great generosity and compassion towards the poor and marginalized, striving to alleviate their suffering wherever possible.
In 1137, Henry embarked on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, journeying to Palestine. While in Jerusalem, he felt a profound calling to join the Premonstratensian order, a religious community founded by Saint Norbert of Xanten. Inspired by their charism of apostolic zeal, liturgical prayer, and communal life, Henry took his vows, becoming a member of the order.
Upon his return to Olmutz, Henry brought the Premonstratensians with him and introduced the order to several places in his diocese. One notable accomplishment was the establishment of an abbey at Strahov, located in modern-day Prague. The Premonstratensians at Strahov Abbey flourished under Henry's guidance, becoming a vibrant center of spirituality, learning, and charitable works.
Throughout his life, Blessed Henry Zdick remained dedicated to his pastoral duties as Bishop of Olmutz, working tirelessly to shepherd his flock and promote unity within the Church. He was known for his gentle and kind demeanor, always attentive to the needs of those entrusted to his care. Henry was beloved by his people, admired for his holiness, humility, and commitment to the Gospel.
