Blessed Heraclio Matute Tobias was a dedicated member of the Claretians and was born on March 11, 1867, in Alesanco, Logroño, Spain. As a young man, he demonstrated a deep devotion to the Catholic faith and felt called to serve God and his fellow human beings.

Following his calling, Heraclio entered the Congregation of the Claretians and professed his religious vows on December 23, 1884. He embarked on a path of spiritual growth and academic excellence, diligently studying theology and philosophy during his formation within the congregation. Recognizing his dedication and commitment, Heraclio was ordained a priest on March 14, 1891.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Father Heraclio Matute Tobias served the people of God with zeal and compassion. He inspired those entrusted to his care through his eloquent preaching and tireless work to spread the good news of the Gospel. His gentle demeanor and humility drew others towards a deeper relationship with God, and he was widely respected both within and beyond the Claretian community.

Tragically, Father Heraclio would meet a martyr's death during the Spanish Civil War. He was among the countless victims who suffered persecution for their unwavering faith and commitment to their religious vocation. On October 18, 1936, in Cervera, Lleida, Spain, Father Heraclio courageously offered his life as a witness to Christ, refusing to renounce his beliefs even in the face of grave danger.

The Claretian community, along with the wider Catholic Church, recognized the sanctity of Father Heraclio Matute Tobias and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith. On December 21, 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable through a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his heroic virtue and dedication to Christ. This declaration was followed by his beatification on October 21, 2017, at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, representing the Holy See.

Today, Blessed Heraclio Matute Tobias stands as a shining example of unwavering faith, selflessness, and dedication to God. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals, reminding them of the enduring power of the Gospel and the call to live out their faith even in the face of adversity.
