Blessed Hermenegildo Iza Aregita, also known as Hermenegildo of the Assumption, was a Trinitarian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 13 April 1879 in Mendata-Albiz, Vizcaya, Spain.

Hermenegildo Iza Aregita grew up in a devout Catholic family and felt a deep calling to serve God from a young age. He joined the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives, commonly known as the Trinitarians, and was ordained a priest. The Trinitarian Order is a religious community dedicated to the redemption of Christian captives.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Father Hermenegildo Iza Aregita actively lived out his faith, providing spiritual guidance and support to both Trinitarian communities and the local faithful. He fearlessly shared the message of Christ's love and mercy, despite the dangers and tensions prevalent during this dark period in Spain's history.

Sadly, on 27 August 1936, Father Hermenegildo Iza Aregita was captured by opposition forces in Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real, Spain. He was known for his unwavering commitment to his faith and his refusal to renounce his religious convictions. Despite the threats and persecution he faced, Father Hermenegildo Iza Aregita remained steadfast in his loyalty to Christ and his Church.

Due to his unyielding faith and his ultimate sacrifice, Father Hermenegildo Iza Aregita was recognized as a martyr for the Catholic faith. His martyrdom was officially acknowledged on 28 June 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, who declared Father Hermenegildo Iza Aregita's martyrdom through a formal decree.

On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Father Hermenegildo Iza Aregita, formally recognizing him as "Blessed" - a title given to those who have attained the first step towards sainthood, acknowledging their exemplary lives of holiness and the miracles attributed to their intercession.

Blessed Hermenegildo Iza Aregita's life and martyrdom serve as a courageous example of unwavering fidelity to Christ and a testament to the power of faith even in the midst of great adversity.
