Biography

Blessed Ion Costist, also known as Ion Kostist, John Kostistk, Geremia of Wallachia, Ieremia of Wallachia, or Jeremiah of Valachia, was born on June 29, 1556, in Zaxo, Suceava, Romania. From a young age, Ion displayed deep piety and a strong desire to seek out the greatest Christians. At the age of 19, he made the decision to emigrate to Italy, believing that this was where he would find the most devout followers of Christ.

Upon arriving in Italy, Ion joined the Franciscan order as a lay brother, taking the name Jeremiah. He devoted himself to a life of selfless service, particularly caring for the poor, sick, and crippled. Jeremiah's ministry involved begging for alms, but he always ensured that the donations he received were given directly to those in need.

Throughout his life, Blessed Ion Costist exemplified the virtues of humility, charity, and compassion. He became widely known for his unwavering dedication to helping the marginalized and less fortunate. People from all walks of life sought his guidance and assistance, drawn to his genuine concern for their well-being.

Jeremiah spent his remaining years in Naples, Italy, where he continued his tireless work among the needy. On March 5, 1625, he passed away from natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and devotion to God's people.

In recognition of his exemplary life, Pope John XXIII declared Jeremiah of Valachia Venerable on December 18, 1959, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Later, on October 30, 1983, Pope John Paul II beatified him, officially conferring the title of Blessed upon Ion Costist.

Today, Blessed Ion Costist is venerated as a role model for charitable works and a source of inspiration for all Christians. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of selflessness, humility, and love for one's fellow human beings.
