Biography

Blessed Józef Stanek, also known as Father Józef Stanek, was born on 4 December 1916 in Lapsze Nizne, Poland. He was baptized at the tender age of one day and tragically orphaned at the age of six. Despite these early challenges in life, Józef received a solid education at a Pallottine school in Wadowice, Poland. It was during this time that his spiritual calling began to take shape.

In 1935, at the age of 18, Józef responded to his vocation and entered the Pallottine novitiate. After several years of formation and study, he was ordained a priest on 7 April 1941. Little did he know that his priesthood would be tested in the crucible of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland.

Father Józef began his ministry as a priest in a country ravaged by war. Despite the dire circumstances, he tirelessly ministered to the spiritual needs of his flock, offering comfort, support, and the sacraments to those suffering under the Nazi regime. His dedication and bravery became evident during the Warsaw Uprising, which commenced on 1 August 1944.

During the Uprising, Father Józef served as a chaplain to the insurgents, remaining in the combat areas to provide spiritual care to both those fighting for their freedom and those trapped in the war-torn city. In a selfless act of heroism, he even gave up his seat on a chance to escape from the city to an injured man, choosing to stay and continue his ministry.

The unwavering faith and compassion of Father Józef Stanek shone through on 22 September 1944, when he courageously approached the Nazi authorities in an attempt to negotiate a settlement and save as many lives as possible. However, instead of working with him, the Nazis seized, severely beat, and ultimately murdered him for his identity as a priest.

Father Józef Stanek died a martyr's death, hanged on 23 September 1944 in a ruined factory located in the Solec district of Czerniaków, Poland. To serve as a chilling example to others, his body was left hanging. This act of cruelty did not diminish his legacy, as his memory continues to inspire countless individuals.

In recognition of his profound faith and martyrdom, Father Józef Stanek is venerated as a blessed within the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II acknowledged his martyrdom on 26 March 1999, issuing a decree in his honor. The following year, on 13 June 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw, Poland.

Blessed Józef Stanek's feast day is celebrated on 23 September. Additionally, he is honored on 12 June as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II. His memory is preserved at the Warsaw Uprising Museum, where a chapel has been named in his honor.

Blessed Józef Stanek's life and ultimate sacrifice stand as a testament to unwavering faith, selfless love, and dedication to the service of others. His memory continues to inspire and remind us of the strength of the human spirit in the midst of unthinkable suffering and tragedy.
