Biography

Blessed Józef Stepniak, also known as Father Florian and prisoner 22738, was born on 3 January 1912 in Zdzary, Mazowieckie, Poland, to Paul and Anna Misztal. He was baptized into the Catholic faith at the tender age of one day. Unfortunately, Jozef's mother passed away when he was very young, leaving his father to raise him on their family farm.

Jozef's deep faith and calling to serve God led him to pursue his studies at the Capuchin college of Saint Fidelis in Lomza, Poland. Although he was not an outstanding student academically, Jozef's determination and unwavering work ethic allowed him to succeed. It was during this time that he became a Franciscan tertiary, embodying the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and his devotion to poverty, humility, and the love of God.

On 14 August 1931, Jozef entered the Capuchin novitiate at Nowe Miasto, Poland, taking the name Florian, and he made his profession on 15 August 1935. Following this, he continued his studies at the Catholic University of Lublin as he prepared for the priesthood.

Tragically, when the Nazi anti-Catholic persecutions commenced after the invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, Father Jozef made the courageous decision not to flee the area. He chose to remain with his fellow friars and the local Christian community, ministering to their spiritual needs and offering solace in such difficult times.

Father Jozef's dedication to his vocation and unwavering faith led to his arrest by the Gestapo on 25 January 1940. He was subsequently imprisoned in Sachsenhausen and then transferred to Dachau, where he endured intense physical labor and starvation. Despite the harsh conditions, Father Jozef's spirit remained unbroken as he continued to offer hope and strength to his fellow prisoners.

Tragically, on 12 August 1942, Father Jozef Stepniak was martyred in the gas chambers of Dachau concentration camp, Oberbayern, Germany, at the age of thirty. His selfless sacrifice and unwavering devotion to God and his fellow prisoners made him one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared Father Jozef Stepniak venerable on 26 March 1999, issuing a decree of martyrdom. The beatification ceremony took place on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, Poland, where Pope John Paul II elevated him to the status of Blessed, acknowledging his ultimate sacrifice for the faith.

Blessed Józef Stepniak, also known as Father Florian, stands as a shining example of courage, resilience, and unwavering faith in the face of persecution. His life serves as an inspiration for all believers, reminding us of the profound strength that can be found in a life dedicated to God and the service of others.
