Biography
Blessed Jacques Corbeau, also known as Jacob, was a devout Catholic and a Premonstratensian canon at the Saint-Augustin monastery in Thérouanne, Pas-de-Calais, located in the historic region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. Born in the latter part of the 16th century in France, Jacques dedicated his life to the service of God and his community.
Known for his exceptional humility and deep compassion for the less fortunate, Jacques was chosen as the abbot of the Saint-Augustin monastery in 1603, a position he held for the next 39 years. As a leader, he sought to inspire those under his care with his unwavering faith and commitment to the principles of his order.
One defining moment in Jacques' life occurred towards the end of his earthly journey when the city of Thérouanne came under siege. Faced with imminent danger, Jacques and his fellow brothers were forced to flee the monastery in order
to ensure their safety. This period of exile brought many challenges, both physical and spiritual, but Jacques faced them with an unyielding faith and trust in God's providence.
Eventually, Jacques found refuge in the town of Veurne, located in Flanders (in modern-day Belgium). It was there that he passed away in 1642 from natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of holiness and unwavering devotion to God. Though he effectively met his death in exile, his memory would live on among those who were touched by his humility, charity, and unwavering commitment to his calling.
While the details of his representation remain unknown, the Premonstratensian Order commemorates the feast day of Blessed Jacques Corbeau on 8th January, honoring his significant contributions to the order and the example of holiness he set forth.
His dedication to serving God and his community, even in the face of adversity, remains an inspiration to all who strive to live a life deeply rooted in faith, humility, and love for others.
