Biography

Blessed Jane of Orvieto, also known as Vanna of Orvieto or Giovanna of Orvieto, was born around 1264 in Carnaiola, Italy. She came from a humble peasant family, but her life would be marked by extraordinary spiritual experiences and devotion to God.

Tragically, Jane was orphaned at the tender age of five, and she was left under the care of relatives. Despite the difficulties she faced, Jane exhibited a strong sense of faith from a young age. As she grew older, she developed remarkable talents as a seamstress and embroiderer, using her skills to support herself.

However, Blessed Jane's true calling lay in her deep desire to dedicate her life to God. Rejecting offers of marriage, Jane instead took up the habit of a Dominican tertiary in Orvieto, Italy. As a Dominican tertiary, she lived a life committed to the values and teachings of the Dominican Order, while adhering to her own unique spiritual practices.

Jane's spiritual journey was marked by profound prayer and contemplation, leading her to experience numerous mystical visions. She was particularly known for her prophetic abilities, accurately foretelling future events. Her reputation as a visionary and prophet quickly grew, attracting individuals seeking her guidance and insight.

Alongside her mystical encounters with God, Jane was recognized for her reputed ability to perform miracles. Countless testimonies exist of healings and other miraculous occurrences attributed to her intercession. Additionally, it is said that she bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ's crucifixion, on her body.

Blessed Jane's life was characterized by unwavering dedication to her faith, as well as her relentless pursuit of a union with God. Despite any challenges that may have arisen, she continued to serve as a source of inspiration and spiritual strength for those around her. Her deep humility and devotion led many to seek her guidance and to witness firsthand the holiness that emanated from her.

On July 23, 1306, Blessed Jane of Orvieto peacefully passed away from natural causes. Her sanctity was recognized by the Catholic Church centuries later, and on September 11, 1754, Pope Benedict XIV officially beatified her and confirmed her cultus (public veneration).

Today, Blessed Jane of Orvieto stands as a role model for those seeking a closer relationship with God. Her life of prayer, prophetic insight, miraculous deeds, and unwavering devotion continue to inspire and guide believers on their own spiritual journeys. Her feast day is celebrated on July 23, although, on some calendars, it is also observed on July 24.
