Biography

Blessed Jesús De Sande Tena was a priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, serving in the Villaharta community. He was born on 10 August 1899 in Monterrubio, Badajoz, Spain. Jesús De Sande Tena dedicated his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church, and he was known for his deep faith and commitment to his parishioners.

During the Spanish Civil War, which occurred from 1936 to 1939, Jesús De Sande Tena bravely remained in Villaharta, a small town in the province of Córdoba, despite the danger and violent unrest that engulfed the country. It was during this time of great upheaval that he ultimately met his martyrdom.

On 27 September 1936, while fulfilling his priestly duties, Blessed Jesús De Sande Tena was captured by anti-Catholic militants who aggressively sought to suppress religious expression and persecute clergy members. Despite facing threats to his own life, he stood unwavering in his faith and remained steadfast in his commitment to ministering to the faithful.

Jesús De Sande Tena's captors subjected him to torture and martyred him for his refusal to renounce his faith. On that fateful day, he fearlessly displayed the virtue of fortitude, accepting his fate with Christ-like humility and unwavering devotion to God. His martyrdom is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his vocation and his love for Christ and his Church.

Blessed Jesús De Sande Tena's exemplary life of service and courageous martyrdom was officially recognized by the Catholic Church on 23 November 2020, when Pope Francis declared him venerable. A year later, on 16 October 2021, Pope Francis presided over his beatification ceremony at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification recognition was led by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, marking a significant honor for Jesús De Sande Tena and a cause for celebration and inspiration for the faithful.

As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Blessed Jesús De Sande Tena serves as a role model for all who aspire to follow Christ and live out their faith with unwavering dedication.
