Biography

Blessed Jesús Moreno Ruiz, also known as Jesús Moreno Ruiz de la Puerta, was born on 13 January 1915 in Osorno, Palencia, Spain. He joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and made his religious profession in 1934.

During the tumultuous era of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Jesús Moreno Ruiz bravely witnessed his faith amidst great turmoil and persecution. He ultimately met a martyr's death on 29 September 1936 at a ruined house next to the Pont de Ser in Seriñá, Girona, Spain. He was machine-gunned by members of the Communist militia purely because of his Catholic faith. His remains were initially buried in a mass grave near the site of his execution. Later on 30 March 1940, his relics were re-interred in a niche in the cemetery of Canet de Mar, Spain.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Blessed Jesús Moreno Ruiz was venerated on 8 July 2016 by Pope Francis, who issued a decree of martyrdom. Pope Francis further beatified him on 6 May 2017 in a solemn ceremony held at the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Girona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing the Holy See.

Though specific details of his life and achievements are limited, what shines through is his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith, even in the face of persecution and martyrdom. Blessed Jesús Moreno Ruiz's life and sacrifice continue to inspire people around the world to stand firm in their beliefs and to face adversity with unwavering devotion. We honor his memory and seek his intercession as a blessed martyr in heaven.
