Biography

Blessed Joan Prats Gibert, also known as Joan Gibert i Romeu, was born on 26 October 1903 in Selva del Camp, Tarragona, Spain. He became a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret, and made his profession on 15 August 1921. Deeply committed to his faith and the service of others, Joan pursued his vocation and was ordained a priest on 22 December 1928.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant, Father Joan Prats Gibert fearlessly stood up for his beliefs and ministered to those in need. However, his dedicated service to God and his fellow human beings led to his martyrdom. On 17 August 1936, he was brutally executed by being shot in Montmaneu, Barcelona, Spain.

Recognizing his unwavering witness to the Catholic faith and his sacrifice in the face of religious persecution, Pope Francis decreed the veneration of Blessed Joan Prats Gibert on 21 December 2016. This declaration acknowledged his martyrdom and his noble example of faithfulness to Christ.

Later, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis, through the beatification ceremony, elevated Joan Prats Gibert to the status of Blessed. The beatification took place at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato. This solemn occasion celebrated the life and martyrdom of Blessed Joan, emphasizing his heroic virtue and dedication to his religious calling.
