Biography

Blessed Joan Romeu y Canadell, also known as Domènec of Sant Pere de Riudebitlles or Doménech of Sant Pere de Riudebittles, was born on 11 December 1882 in Sant Pere de Riudebitlles, Barcelona, Spain. He joined the Capuchin Franciscan Friars Minor in 1908 and made his solemn profession on 4 October 1912. After several years of dedicated service and formation, he was ordained a priest on 25 May 1917.

Father Joan's commitment to mission work led him to serve in Costa Rica and Nicaragua until 1930. At that time, he returned to Spain and resided in the Franciscan convent in Manresa. Unfortunately, the country was deeply divided by the Spanish Civil War, and on 22 July 1936, the area where the convent was located fell under the control of Communist forces.

Tragically, on the evening of 27 July 1936, as Father Joan was leaving the convent, he was spotted by Marxists who immediately kidnapped and subjected him to torture. He fearlessly embraced his martyrdom, remaining faithful to his religious vows and commitment to Christ. Father Joan was ultimately shot and killed, sealing his witness to the faith with his blood.

Joan Romeu y Canadell was officially recognized as a martyr on 23 January 2020 by Pope Francis, who issued a decree affirming his heroic sacrifice. On 6 November 2021, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn celebration held at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Manresa, Spain. This beatification recognized Father Joan's virtuous life, his steadfast faith, and his heroic death for the sake of the Gospel.

Blessed Joan Romeu y Canadell's life exemplifies the selflessness and courage of those who dedicate themselves to the service of God and others, even in the face of great adversity. His feast day is commemorated on 27 July, the date of his martyrdom. We honor his memory, seeking his intercession and taking inspiration from his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith.
