Biography

Blessed John Finch, a layman of steadfast faith, was born into a household where Catholic and Protestant traditions coexisted. His upbringing provided him with intimate insight into both worlds, yet he embraced Catholicism with profound conviction. As a yoeman farmer and married man, Finch dedicated his life to his family and his faith, transforming his home into a vital sanctuary for the clandestine practice of Catholicism. He served diligently as parish clerk and catechist, nurturing the spiritual life of his community, while simultaneously harboring priests and facilitating covert missionary work during a period of intense persecution.

On Christmas Day, 1581, Finch’s unwavering fidelity was tested when he and Father George Ostliffe were ambushed and arrested. Imprisoned in the Earl of Derby’s residence and later in the Fleet prison, Manchester, and the House of Correction, Finch endured prolonged torture and relentless pressure.
