Biography

Blessed José Blanco Salgado, also known as José Salgado Blanco, was a devoted Friar in the Salesians of Don Bosco who met a martyr's fate during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 10 November 1892 in the village of Souto-San Bartolomé de Ganade, located in the province of Orense, Spain.

From an early age, José Blanco Salgado exhibited a deep religious devotion and a strong desire to serve God. Recognizing his calling, he joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious order dedicated to the education and spiritual guidance of young people. As a member of the Salesians, José Blanco Salgado sought to emulate the teachings and example of their founder, Saint John Bosco.

During his time as a friar, José Blanco Salgado dedicated himself to teaching and caring for disadvantaged youth, imparting not only academic knowledge but also fostering their spiritual growth and character development. He played an active role in the formation of young individuals, instilling in them a sense of faith, compassion, and integrity.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought about a period of intense persecution and violence against religious figures and institutions. José Blanco Salgado, along with many other Catholic clergy, became a target of the anti-Catholic factions who sought to eradicate any influence of the Church in Spanish society.

In the early hours of 21 July 1936, in Morón, Seville, José Blanco Salgado was captured by anti-religious forces. He was subjected to cruel treatment and, refusing to renounce his faith, remained steadfast and unwavering in his commitment to God. José Blanco Salgado ultimately paid the ultimate price for his dedication to the Church, as he was martyred for his beliefs.

Following his death, the holiness and fortitude exhibited by José Blanco Salgado gained recognition from the Catholic Church. On 26 June 2006, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, officially acknowledging his sacrifice for the faith. The beatification ceremony took place on 28 October 2007, again presided over by Pope Benedict XVI, who elevated José Blanco Salgado to the rank of Blessed.

Blessed José Blanco Salgado serves as a reminder of the courage and unwavering faith displayed by countless individuals during a time of great strife and persecution in Spain. His life continues to inspire and encourage the faithful to stand firm in their beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His feast day is celebrated on 21 July to honor the memory and sacrifice of this dedicated Salesian friar.
