Biography

Blessed José Fernández De Henestrosa Boza, also known as José Fernández, was a married layman born in Fuente Obejuna, Córdoba, Spain, in 1898. He lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, known as the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939.

José Fernández was a devout Catholic and a devoted member of the diocese of Córdoba. He lived a righteous and faithful life, committed to his faith and family. As a married layman, he exemplified the virtues of a Christian and actively participated in the life of his parish. His dedication to his duties as a husband and father, combined with his unwavering commitment to his faith, serves as an inspiration to many.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which saw a brutal conflict between Republicans and Nationalists, José Fernández was martyred for his Catholic faith. On September 22, 1936, in Fuente Obejuna, Córdoba, he faced persecution for his unwavering belief in Christ. In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared José Fernández De Henestrosa Boza as blessed on October 16, 2021.
