Biography

Blessed José Pérez González, also known as Ramiro of Sobradillo, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on January 5, 1907, in Sobradillo, Salamanca, Spain. Despite the challenges and turmoil of his time, José felt a strong calling to the priesthood and entered the Capuchin order.

As a young priest, José dedicated himself to the service of God and his community. He was known for his kindness, compassion, and devotion to the teachings of Christ. José's deep faith inspired those around him and he became a respected and beloved figure in his parish.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought about a period of intense persecution against Catholics and clergy. José, along with many other priests and religious, became a target of the anti-Catholic sentiment prevalent at the time. Despite the danger, he refused to abandon his post or renounce his faith.

Tragically, on November 27, 1936, José Pérez González met his martyrdom in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Spain. He was among many who were summarily executed for their religious beliefs. José's death was a testament to his unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution.

The life and martyrdom of Blessed José Pérez González did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. On March 27, 2013, Pope Francis recognized José's martyrdom with a decree, thus venerating him as a blessed.
